Mats

A mat is a cardboard border between the artwork and the frame. It visually enlarges the artwork, separates it from the frame and protects it from contact with the glass. The right mat gives a framed artwork a professional look.

Color

Choose neutral shades — white, cream or light gray work almost every time. The mat color shouldn't compete with the artwork but complement it. Dark mats (black, anthracite) suit photographs and modern graphics.

Border width

Minimum border width is 2 cm; we recommend at least 4 cm. The bottom border is usually 20–25 % wider than the others so the artwork doesn't appear to fall down. For small formats (up to A4), choose wider mats; for large formats, narrower ones suffice.

Cutout

The cutout in the mat must be 2–3 mm smaller than the artwork on each side, so the artwork's edge is covered and no light leaks through. We cut at a 45° angle, creating an elegant beveled edge.
